Did you know that about half of all Web searches in the United States are conducted with the Google search engine?1 If you are interested in increasing traffic to your Web site, these tips may help boost your site’s visibility in Google search results.

Key In the Right Keywords
Google searches the Web by scanning sites for keywords entered by the user. Perhaps the most important step in making your site Google-friendly is to add keywords, especially to your home page, that accurately reflect the unique nature of your business and the services you offer. This article discusses how to add keywords to your site. (It also describes how to register your site with Google and other search engines to help increase its visibility.)

Link Up
Links from one site to another help elevate the linked page’s importance in Google search results. Google uses a sophisticated formula to display pages that are both important and relevant to a keyword search. The more links to your page, the more likely it is to attract Google’s attention. Linking your site with those of your colleagues who are not direct competitors may help make it more visible.

Don’t Play the Fool
Although there are legitimate consulting firms that can improve your site’s flow and content, be careful of companies that “guarantee” your site a high rank in search results. Some companies use deceptive tactics to fool search engines. If your domain is affiliated with one of these deceptive services, it could be banned from Google’s index.

Stay Out of the Picture
Google typically doesn’t read words that are embedded in images, graphics, or photographs. Make sure that any important keywords that appear in graphic images (such as in jpeg or tiff files) also appear elsewhere on your home page as text.
